Introducing the new SCMP designation

Message from the President

Greetings fellow BC Institute PMAC members......

It is a privilege to write to you for the first time as your new President.  It was quite an honor, in fact a bit surprising to receive the nominaiton, since I have been away from Institute activities for some time.  It didn't take long for my interest to grow.

My background in PMAC goes back to the late 1980s as a member of the Calgary District. I spent the 1990s in the Nova Scotia District and worked with a fine Board of Directors setting up and launching the Nova Scotia Institute, serving as its inaugural President.  I have always found PMAC work to be challenging and rewarding, so it is my pleasure to serve you as BC Institute President, as well as BCs representative on the National Board.

The Association's agenda is packed with challenging issues and opportunities such as implementation of the National strategic plan, including rollout of the new SCMP designation you are all aware of.  Educational products and services also continue to be a high priority across the country.  As a apartner with the National Associaiton, the BC Institute will work toward alignment with the National vision and strategies rwhile recognizing the needs of BCI members.

The BC Institute has a lot going for it, and some significant challenges and opportunities of its own.  For example, the previous Board accomplished a great deal in re-structuring Institute governance and received your feedback to the proposed Bylaw revisions, and decided to take a closer look at modernizing the content to meet members' needs.  After significant Board member input, review and discussion this summer, we have developed a new set of revisions, which we will be rolling out this fall.

Beyond governance, the BC Institute Board of Directors will be looking at a host of priorities this term, which is sure to include a re-focus on strategies that demonstrate value for members, and other stakeholders.  We will build on the strategic planning work completed by the previous Board, harmonize our plans with the National strategic plan, and ensure that our objectives and goals are concrete and measurable.

PMAC has achieved some important milestones in recent years, and has provided a strong foundation upon which to build.  I look forward to serving you to achieve new goals and objectives moving forward.

By the way, if you haven't done so already, please make arrangements to attend the BC Instiute Annual Workshop scheduled for October 6-8, 2010.  The Workshop Committee has put together an amazing program including excellent educational content that will inspire you, and a perfect venue for networking with friends and colleageus.  I look forward to meeting you there!

The SCMP Professional Designation:

Further to the notice of February 3that the PMAC National Board of Directorsapproved the Certified Professional Purchaser (C.P.P.) designation be replaced by a new designation that better reflects our field of practice of strategic supply chain management, we are now in the final stages of legal registration and are able to inform you of the name of our new designation.  Our new designati nwill be:

SCMP – Supply Chain Management Professional

In French, our credential will be known as:

p.g.c.a. – Professionnel en gestion de la chaîne d’approvisionnement

The SCMP marks an evolution of the profession beyond our roots in purchasing. Representing strategic, global and integrated thinking, the SCMP will convey that we are Professionals in the multiple aspects of supply chain management or SCM. With a rigorous accreditation program, Code of Ethics and requirement for continuous professional learning and development, the new designation positions our members as leaders in a changing marketplace.

A logo for the new designation has been designed to powerfully communicate the value proposition of the Supply Chain Management Professional:

Supply Chain Management Professional

Featuring an infinity symbol, the SCMP logo signifies an unbroken network that stretches from supplier to customer. The three links comprise the core areas of supply chain management: procurement, operations and logistics. Our colour scheme is dignified and professional, allowing us to build on the brand recognition of the teal C.P.P. logo. The new logo will be phased in over time as we responsibly use up existing marketing collateral and update our corporate identity materials.

As previously stated, the new designation will be granted to all current holders of the C.P.P. and remaining Principles-based accreditation program transition candidates who successfully complete their program. Strategic Supply Chain Management Leadership Program (SSCMLP) graduates will also receive the new designation. With the new designation launch, we expect to have the strength of 3,000 accredited members behind our SCMP brand.

The PMAC National office is working with our Provincial and Territorial Institutes to co-ordinate the roll-out of the new designation, and finalizing remaining as the legal aspects of the change as they are completed. Members will be advised when they will receive the SCMP and employers and other stakeholders will learn about the new designation through a comprehensive marketing communications plan. We will invest close to $1 million over the next two years to promote the new designation and the unique and distinctive competencies of our SCMPs.

As strategic supply chain management emerges as the source of competitive advantage in our economy, our new designation will allow us to enhance the awareness, understanding and recognition of the expertise that our members contribute to the success of any organization.  Join us in looking to the future with great optimism as we continue to elevate our profession.
